Dr. Tom’s Empowered Healing – Edition #3: August 2023

Happy August, friends! Is it just me, or does it seem like Summer is flying by? I do hope you’ve taken plenty of opportunities to go out and explore natural spaces!

As we enjoy the great outdoors in these warmer months, it’s essential to be mindful of ticks. For example, should you be bitten by one – being able to identify the tick that bit you as this can help you take the necessary precautions.

Let’s explore three common tick types and their distinguishing features:

**Deer tick or Blacklegged tick (Ixodes scapularis)
  • Transmits the bacteria Borrelia burgdorferi, which causes Lyme disease, as well as Borrelia miyamotoi, Anaplasma and Babesia. In some areas Bartonella has been found in Ixodes ticks
  • High rates of ticks being infected – upwards of 70% in many areas
  • Adult females are reddish-brown with a black shield on their back
  • Nymphs are the size of a poppy seed and are responsible for about 95% of the cases of Lyme disease, so be on the lookout for these.

**Dog tick (Dermacentor variabilis)

  • Relatively large size
  • Bodies adorned with brown and creamy white markings
  • Carry Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever

Good news: Dog ticks DO NOT carry Lyme disease!**Lone Star tick (Amblyomma americanum)

  • Adult females with a distinct large white dot on their back
  • Transmit Ehrlichiosis and ‘Stari’ borreliosis, more rarely Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever
  • Associated with the development of red meat allergy (Alpha-gal syndrome)

Also, Lone Star ticks DO NOT carry Lyme disease!

Remember to take preventive measures when spending time outdoors. Identifying ticks can make all the difference in protecting yourself and your loved ones!
